Turkish swimming champion earns scholarship to Harvard
Ümitcan Güreş, a gold medalist in the 50-meter butterfly category of the European Junior Swimming Championship 2017, has been awarded a scholarship to Harvard University.
The 19-year-old national team and Enka Sports Club athlete won the bronze medal in the 100-meter butterfly category at the Mediterranean Games held in June.
Güreş ranked fifth in the 50-meter butterfly and eighth in the 100-meter butterfly at the sixth FINA World Juniors Swimming Championship.
Currently a student at the German High School in Istanbul, Güreş has been swimming since the age of seven and has broken several national records so far.
He has been in a training camp with his coach Fatih Yıldırım in Turkey’s southern province of Antalya. They will attend the European swimming championship, which will be held in Scotland starting on Aug. 3.
“I got e-mails from swimming team coaches of prominent universities. I had been wishing to study economics at Harvard, so it is a great pleasure for me to be granted a scholarship to Harvard,” Güreş said.
