Turkey’s most peaceful village: Ildırı
Turkey’s most peaceful village: Ildırı
Hürriyet Travel has selected Ildırı in western Turkey as the country’s most peaceful village. Click through for the story in photos...
According to traveler Erdoğan Gümüş, the fishermen’s village on the Karaburun Peninsula in the İzmir province presents picturesque scenes of stone houses and a turquoise sea. (Photos: Alamy)
Ildırı is only 20 kilometers away from İzmir’s world-renowned touristic district of Çeşme.
Erythari, which is the largest ancient settlement on the peninsula, lies on the hill in the north of the village.
One of the earliest known ancient theaters is in Erythari.
The village itself is particularly striking with its old houses overlooking the Aegean Sea.
As the area is classified as a protected site, it is not possible to build new buildings or even repair the old ones without permit.
Ildırı is also one of the stops on the Olive Road designated by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, a trekking route that connects nature-lovers with locals and their history.
Ildırı Culture and Arts Festival, organized by the Çeşme Municipality, has also become popular in recent years with its concerts, theater plays and workshops.
When you visit Ildırı, you can go to a fishermen’s shop, pick your fish, take it to a nearby restaurant and ask them to cook it for you.
Our suggestion for a tour: Visit Erythari, take a stroll in Ildırı and taste the “barbun” fish in the most peaceful village in Turkey.
If it is the season, you should also try the delicious artichoke of Ildırı.
